Tissue Paper Nests & The Artful Year
I am always looking for new ways to foster Molly’s creative thinking and encourage more ‘making time’ beyond the reaches of our wifi!!, so when I heard that the creator of one of my favorite blogs The Artful Parent had published her second book dedicated to just that, I just had to get my hands on a copy. Mother, writer and children’s art enabler the very inspiring Jean Van’t Hul has compiled a fun and engaging collection of do-able arts and crafts projects, decorations and seasonal recipes for celebrating the seasons, for every member of the family. An online friend and fellow member of the Rockin Art Moms group, I was super excited when Jean asked me to be a part of her book tour.
With the flip of a page The Artful Year takes you on a beautifully wholesome journey of seasonal exploration, from nature inspired activities to recycled crafts and tempting treats to cook together with your children. I want to make almost everything in the book! But Molly weighed in and voted for the tissue paper nests, to hold all her Easter treats :)
I have been underestimating tissue paper! the feathery weight and texture is beautiful to work with, the way the colours can bleed into eachother is stunning, but I had no idea that you could create something 3D with it!! The instructions for making in the book were very simple to follow and I just ‘love’ how the nest turned out…. and Molly loved getting messy with a bowl of watered down craft glue.
After leaving along for a few days drying what emerged from the bowl mold was so pretty, shiny and smooth on the inside and beautifully textured on the outside. Amazing what can be created with just tissue paper and craft glue!
A few favorites that immediately caught my eye when The Artful Year first arrived include artful bunny ears (an absolute must Easter craft for kids), a Simon Says drawing game, melted crayon leaves, a stained glass wreath made with a bundit tin! (on the list for next Christmas) and styrofoam printed cards. The bookmarks are growing by the day…
Sand Tattoos! how cool!
